The main thing that needs to be said about this ride is that its not a “bumpy crashy and unfortable” coaster as some say… The reason why some think so is because the ride is in the dark.
When speeding around a corner (that the human body can see) on a rollercoaster the human body knows its coming, hence preparing itself. Seeing the track in front of you means the human body reacts, making for a comfortable ride, however Space Mountain is mainly in darkness, so a few corners are tight and do make the head bash around in the seat restraint. Personally never been uncomfortable on this ride, and have been on this about 10 times in one day.
The seat restraints are well padded, with the on board music pumping away behind your ears, theming inside is fantastic, keep an eye out for red “laser type” lights at the end- makes you feel quite spaced out! This ride is one of my favourite coasters in Europe and blows the socks off any other Space Mountain currently in Disney parks.
I just have to say that as sad as it seems, Space Mountain is one of the reasons I come to Disney alone! I do agree, it makes you nauseas, and YES it does bang your head around, but I’m sorry people but I think it adds to the experience!
This is possibly my favourite ever rollercoaster and definitely agree that it’s best to do this as night, as it’s all lit up and so is the park, gives a more magical feel (which is what Disney’s about right?).
I much prefer this Paris version to the Florida one, and I love the way you just shoot up and pause, and shoot again, rather than creep.
Went on this every day during EMH and it is by far my favourite DLRP ride. Loved the theming and the ride is pretty cool as well. However, I did find that after 2-3 goes in succession my head was starting to buzz/hurt a bit from the banging around.
I tried various ways of minimising this on different days; hat/no hat, head pushed back, head relaxed, hold restraint handles, don’t hold handles, but could not find a position that stopped the banging about. I seem to feel the head banging most at the very end of the ride (swirly red light tunnel) and I’d try and tense up here to stop it. My daughter who is 5′ 6″ (I’m 5′ 8″) rode every time with me and she had no problems whatsoever. She does have a lot of hair whereas I shave my head, so maybe lots of hair is the answer ;-)
Despite all of this it is an awesome ride and everybody should try it at least once.
Went on this as the queue was short, got bashed around a lot. I came off with several bruises and a headache. I lost a hair clip and have to say I will stick with the Florida version.
The effects are great and also with the lights it makes it so much more “spacey”. The launch at the start is so cool and if you have the chance, go in the front seats because the experience is so much better.
The queue always is long so the fastpasses are very handy. The queue zone is rather….plain but the ride definitly makes up for it.
I think Space Mountain: Mission 2 is the simply the best attraction at Disneyland Paris. It makes a lot of fun and the effects are magnificent. Truely it bangs your head round but this remains to the attraction. I don´t think that your head stays calm in space, then why in a space attraction.
The queue isn´t very long. Only once I had to wait 30 minutes ( it was summer, beutiful wheater and at least thousands of people).
I only can say: if you like rollercoasters then you love Space Mountain!
Excellent ride! The new updated effects make it a much more interesting ride and although I’ve never really been a fan of coasters that go upside down, it’s almost better in the dark – not scary, just weird feeling! It’s open during magic hours, and when we saw it during morning magic hours in May the queues were tiny. There were also numerous times over the days with short (10min or less) queues. It’s definitely worth a go, the only negative being the aforementioned head bumping.
We rode this three times on our trip just last week. Two out of the three times we had major head banging and came off with a slight headache, but one time mysteriously it was perfect and our heads were not rattled about at all, have yet to figure out why though! A tip is to keep your head pressed back into the head rest to avoid banging your ears from side to side!
I’m a bit of a wimp, and generally stay away from any ride with a loop, but I thoroughly enjoyed this ride. It helps that the loops are pretty much in the dark, so you don’t get a chance to worry about them. Yes, there’s a bit of shuddering, but my head wasn’t knocked about as much as I feared. I was ready for another go as soon as the ride finished!
I took this ride at 9 pm on a busy weekend, and it was a walk-on.
We find Space Mountain a bit dissapointing. We expected some real changes in Mission 2, which we didn’t experience. It’s still not a steady coaster and your head get’s bumped tot the sides.
I am going to be relatively odd here but I think that this ride is rubbish. I would compare it to getting shot out of a cannon and bouncing down a very big hill. The theming is excellent, the ride build up also.
As you step in a lot is expected and should be as you see people getting shot up through the cloud of steam. Once away and waiting on the lift the feeling of excitement is there and as you get shot up its amazing but then you dive into falling down the steep hill with serious head chatter, I have came off it with a really dizzy sore head.
On first impressions from the outside (and compared to the Space Mountains in other parks around the world) this Space Mountain definitely looks more interesting and the Jules Verne theming is much more interesting.
The ride is also very different, as I would liken it to being in a tumble dryer! Not one for people with weak stomachs, but fun as a one-off.
I was really sceptical when I did space mountain mission 2, cause I was a big fan of the original “de la terre a la lune”-theme.
However I have to admit: great new ride. Perfect visual effects! Although the old soundtrack was more”disney-touched” I have to say that the new music makes you think you`re travelling even faster!
So all in all :
I liked the old theming (and the old logo) much more, cause it was more disney; but as a ride mission 2 is far better. Don`t miss this excellent adventure!!!
For the first few years of “Euro Disney” things didn’t look good… Poor attandence, poor profits and a small park without a flagship attraction. Then came Space Mountain “La Terre De La Lune” and everything looked good in the House of Mouse.
So how does this ride fair 10 years down the line? I will be using the “Five F’s” and scoring out of five. The Five F’s are…
FEEMING – How well Themed the ride is to its surroundings – the ride “experience”…
FEATURES – How many rollercoaster features the ride has – drops, corkscrews etc…
FAST – Just how mind-bogglingly, earth-shatteringly fast the ride goes…
FEAR – Just how soul-destroyingly, pant-wettingly scary the ride is…
FUN – The over enjoyment of the ride…

FEEMING (Theming) -
DLRP is different from the other parks around the world for a number of reasions. But one that really stands out is Discoveryland. Every other park has Tomorrowland with visions of the future – but in Paris they have gone backwards. This is called Retrofuturism – or what Jules Verne thought the future might be like.
Space Mountain was originally based on the Verne classic “La Terre De La Lune” or “From the Earth to the Moon” which is about a group of gun fanatics from the Baltimore Gun Club who decide to fire a bullet at the moon. As such the launch mechanism of the coaster is designed to look like a giant smoking cannon and the loading bay features design blueprints and large crest of the BaltimoreGun Club.
The ride originally featured 2D planets which made it look like you were flying through an old 1920’s movie. This all changed with Mission 2.
The current ride (or Mission 2 as it is known) is a much more futuristic “Star Trek” affair with the coaster flying around realistic galaxies and video screens giving “mission control” reports. The ride is a visual feast.

FEATURES -
The ride is packed with great features. Firstly you start the ride by being blasted skywards at 1.5G before decending into the body of the mountain.
The rocket-like coaster car flies through a pitch-black void lit only by stars, galaxies and planets that it looks like you are sure to hit head-on!
The Paris version of Space Mountain is the only version to include inversions with a “corkscrew twist” and a “loop the loop” to keep the pulse racing as you fly around the cosmos.

FAST -
Next to my previous reviews of B.T.M. and C’s C the velocities of Space Mountain leave them for dust. You really feel the full G-force of that initial launch and most of the time through the ride you can’t tell whether you are right-way-up or upside-down.
However, the ride does stop and start a bit – mostly to give you a chance to look at the pretty visuals which is great – but it just isn;t as heart-stoppingly fast as the Rock’n'Rollercoaster. Therefore I had to drop a point.

FEAR and FUN
I love rollercoasters. They make me do funny things like scream, shout and beg for mercy! I have been known to scream “CORKSCREW!!!!!!!!!” whilst going through a big twist and thats all part of the enjoyment.
This ride is literally a rollercoaster of emotions. From that initial moment the rocket is set into position, looking 45 degrees up to a clear blue sky – you know you are in for something special.
The momentary pauses in the ride (to see the star go supernova etc) gives your body a chance to relax, moments before it gets scared witless again!
Other plus points for this ride are the FastPass system and the fact during Extra Magic Hours you can ride it to your heart’s content before anyone else gets into the park!
This is a toughie….I used to love Space Mountain and there is no doubt the change over to 2 has seen improvements in some of the themeing. I simply can’t get past the fact though that the ride itself is so rough – so rough in fact, I wouldn’t be concerned if I never went on it again. It’s certainly not a re-ride option that’s for sure. It still appears to give many riders a good time so certainly give it a go….I do think however that time hasn’t been kind of this rattle monster.
Space Mountain Mission 2. What can I say? How can I put it into words?
WOW
This ride just blows you away. The effects, the sounds, the loops, the outer lighting, everything comes together perfectly to form one of, if not the best ride in the park. No, the best ride in the world.
A lot of people have said that de la terre a la lune was better, and yeah they probably should’ve kept the Stellar Walkway and maybe the soundtrack isn’t the same, but esentially it is the same ride; speeding around at high speed in space.
This is a great rollercoaster to start the day off into a flying start. Every turn is a different thrill. Its definitely the roughest rollercoaster in the whole kingdom. Every time I get off my head feels like its about to explode.
TIP my tip is wear a hat or a hoody top. The lighting effects are brill and the theme is great. I actually thought I was being shot into space.
Love the theming it’s quite an exhilarating ride with some fantastic effects and great music, however DO take paracetamol it’s possibly the roughest coaster I have ever ridden-i usually find myself praying it’s over before i sustain injury or a massive headache.
Bit of a boneshaker.
TIP: You miss a few great effects if you sit at the front, I found the further back you sit the more you see as first time I rode this we had the very last carriage and I was wowed by some of the bits, but then we went on again and had the front carriage I didn’t get to see a lot of things as they happened after the first couple of carriages passed them-but the downside to being near the back is it’s even rougher!
Fantastic ride! Is so good to ride at night, if you look for your left side, during the rise up, you can see all the park illuminated by the lights, it’s amazing!
During the winter and all the other “cold seasons” there’s a good experience during the rise up: when you reach the top, you feel a very cold air on your face that you feel a shiver, but a very good shiver, ’cause you know, you are in Disneyland, and riding in one of the best rides of the park :)
What can i say about space mountain mission 2? It is absolutely FANTASTIC!! A must ride attraction. You can not possibly experience DLRP to its fullest without Riding this. Although the queue can be quite long sometimes and seems as if it is never ending, it is worth the wait. The fast pass system also lets you bypass most of the worsts parts of the queue so i do recommend you get one.
The ride starts off with a peaceful depart from the station into what looks like a drain pipe (In my opinion) You turn a corner and drop very suddenly then you are pulled up along a long tunnel where you stop for about 20 seconds! This is the best part of the ride. In your ears you can hear “10!” “9!” “8!” “7!” “6!” “5!” Etc… until finally at 1 you blast off at 60 MPH up the long tunnel. As you begin to reach the top there is a feeling of weightlessness to simulate the entering into orbit. After that it is just an indescribable ride. You have to visit it!! If you don’t you don’t know what you are missing!!
Great ride! The best bit is the blast off, wow its cool! Go on it at night and its even cooler! The effects are way better this time round.
Head-banging is a problem with this ride, so wear a hat and hood. They need softer headrests!!!!
A brilliant ride with amazing special effects!
The queue can get long, but there is plenty to look at on the way.
Not the most turbulent of Disney roller coasters as long as you keep your head back against the head rest as advised.
The launch is certainly the best part of the ride!
Definitely in the top 5 rides to do while there!!!
I am writing this second review to make amends to my first review i made (15 reviews before this one- you should read it, its very well written) because i have recently returned to the resort (for the 21st time) and spent a great deal of my time there riding this marvel of roller-coastery (i doubt thats a real word, but you know what i mean). While i do miss de la terre a la lune and its wonderful soundtrack, mission 2 is one of the best rides in Europe. Thinking back to the original ride, the theming inside the ride was a bit pathetic to be honest. it featured two-dimensional asteroids and likenesses of characters from the book on which it was based as well as lots of ultraviolet paint and other very uninspiring and dated special effects.
Mission 2 gave Space Mountain some gorgeous special effects which will make your jaw drop as you hurtle past asteroids, fields of stars and planets. I have also experienced a strange and unexpected wonder- I am the perfect size and shape for Space Mountain and Indiana Jones (2 rides which are infamous for rattling and shaking heads around) without any uncomfortable experiences what-so-ever.
The launch at the beginning is incredible and feels far faster than it really is (around 50mph) due to the incline of the ride- which makes the acceleration feel even faster than that of Rita at Alton Towers (which I find boring by the way). The track for the ride is full of tight turns, twists and loops and forms a very complex knot which creates a wonderful experience and a brilliant ride.
So in all, Space Mountain is a marvelous ride, however speaking from experience from when i was a good bit shorter than i am today- the head shaking does make a very strong negative impact on ride enjoyment. However, if you too are a 5′9” skinny, broad shouldered 19yr old you will be able to enjoy this ride in all its glory. (i rode it 7 times in a row and loved it each time)
I tried the Space Mountain Mission 2 for the very first time on a recent trip (early February 2008) and rode on my own as my wife did not wish to accompany me. Scardy cat!!
Off I went and joined the queue. You walk through darkened tunnels with pictures of the cosmos on the walls and you can hear the thumps of the ride – along with the screams – as you move along.
Once at the lauch point, you climb aboard you capsule and restrain yourself with the over-the-shoulder restraint. Then off you and your fellow passengers go, twisting your way towards the breech where you end up pointing skywards.
A gush of steam and some mean acceleration and up you go to the doors at the top of the “barrel”. In you go on a journey through stars and planets, loops, barrel rolls, drops and turns as you make you way. I was disappointed that the sound effects did not appear to come out of the head rests (as expected) so the whole thing was little flat for me.
I did not find the ride too rough to handle – I’m used to being thrown around the sky a bit – but I can appreciate its high “g” parts.
This has got to be tried at least once. I would not recommend it for the younger family members.
I usually collect a pin badge from each ride that i do to add to my lanyard but in Fenruary 2008 no badges were available as the new designs were being re-launched at the end of February 2008 – so I missed out.
Of all the ‘roller coaster’ rides this one is the worst for me. No matter how hard I wedge myself into the back of my seat I always end up with a headache because my head has rattled around so much. This is not so much a ride as an endurance! I will ride it at least during my stay but prefer Big Thunder Mountain or Indiana Jones.
The effects are so so and rather tame at times and I don’t care for the music much. However I do enjoy the canon shot at the beginning. Try it once but not just after a meal and be prepared for a headache afterwards.
Space mountain mission 2 i agree is not the smoothest ride in the park, but if you went on the original space mountain before it was refurbished into space mountain mission 2 you would think that it was the smoothest ride EVER!. The special effects in the ride are very good, the sound fits very well with the scenery within the ride. Space mountain mission 2 is needing to be fixed alot due to the sound effects in the head rests malfunctioning, but this ride is still the best thrill roller coaster in the park.
Definitely preferred De la Terre a la lune, mission two is on the verge of violent! Your head hurts for hours after this one! Although the swirling red light tunnel is amazing. We got stuck in the canon here 3 weeks ago and had to be taken off down the emergency stairs!
This one wasnt for me and i didnt ride it, but my mum and step dad did. Mum was fine tho said it was very jolty and her neck hurt afterwards. My stepdad actually had to be helped off, as he felt so ill and couldnt go on any more rides that day as a result of feeling ill.
So id recommend it to the more serious roller coaster lover only.
A fantastic rollercoaster. Too many people are complaining about Mission 2 being far worse than the 1st Space Mountain… except for the (sometimes very) bumby vehicles, that’s not true, at least to me. Yet, I have to admit, as a total Space Mountain De la Terre à la Lune fan (it was my first coaster with an inversion), I first missed the old soundtrack. The new one surely misses the grandeur style the former one had, but how punchy it is ! It is fantastic and instantly gave the ride a new twist.
I love the new effects, the new launch, the new soundtrack, even though it’s true though that the new storyline doesn’t make much sense. 9/10
Well, i must say that the first time i rode it was fantastic!! After the launch, i saw the stars and planets, and it was fantastic !!! The unique problem of the ride is that the coaster has some bumps… but i think that is fantastic, because it’s like an incredible voyage.
Definitely one of the best rides at Disney. Love the launch at the start, just a shame it slows down a bit at the top. The swirly tunnel at the end is fab. Top ride!!
It took me three years to pluck up enough courage to go on this ride as I had never experienced looping the loop or corkscrews before. Once I had riden it I was very proud of my achievements and couldn’t wait to go back for more. Having also been on the ‘Rock N Roller Coaster’ in the Studios park I would definately say that SMM2 throws you about more. It is no where as smooth a ride but never the less it still thrills me and it definately worth lining up for!
Oh my God, I thought I was going to die! I hated this ride, I was terrified and screamed the whole time (sorry if you were in front of me! LOL) You see I hate drops and being upside down!! My beloved husband and sister and co. conveniently obscured any of the warning signs as we queued!
After, I said if I had known, I wouldn’t have gone on it, thats when they confessed to what they had done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Admittedly ,its funny as hell looking back, but I will NEVER go on it again.
Its not a bad ride, its just not for me. I cant report on any effects because my eyes were screwed up tight the whole way round!!!!!! LOL
Space Moutain means a lot to me; when it first opend in 1999, i was too short to ride. So while my brother and my dad were being blasted out of the enormous, beautiful cannon; i could only imagine how amazing it must be. My family would visit the park fairly regularly, and each time i was a little closer to my goal. After what felt like an eternity, i was finally able to ride; it was worth it.
De la Terre a la Lune (as it was back then) was the most amazing ride i had ever ridden; the speed, the twists, the inversions, and the theming rendered it the best ride in the world (as far as i know). The best thing of all was the on-ride soundtrack however, which was inspiring, powerful, emotive, and highlighted every hill, fall, and turn. However, Mission 2 came along. Certainly, the ride was beginning to show signs of it’s age, the theming inside the mountain was a bit basic, and the mountain was getting a bit tatty. The re-launched version makes the use of some seriously impressive technology (though the on-ride soundtrack has a tendancy to go wrong) and the effects are jawdropping. However, they have almost destroyed the ride’s soul.
The imagineers gave the ride a new premise, distancing it from the Jules Verne novel which inspired its first incarnation, replaing it with a dry, uninspiring theme (apparently after the success of the columbiad, they are now sending people further into space- that’s it!) The ride still has the same track, and has a faster launch (but with a countdown which eliminates the uncertain, surprise factor the old launch system had). However, the ride is not as good as it once was- it is still brilliant, but not fantastic. Also, the new soundtrack is nothing compared to the old one!
Sorry – didn’t like this one. I must be getting old or something.
I have been on numerous rollercoasters including this ride in Florida. I think they have gone too far with this one – you just end up getting whip lash. (Aerosmith was much better)
Space Mountain mission 2 was an incredible roller coaster! One of the best ones that I have been on. I’ve been on the new track at Disneyland Anaheim and although it is a lot more tame and not as jerky, SMM2 is definitely better! The inversions are great, although the first one is barely felt IMO. All and all an excellent ride!
Brilliant theme, Great Design……. But I prefered De la Terre à la Lune (From the Earth to the Moon). I think for mission 2 they should have just done a referb on the cars, and interior.
Tad bit rough, but apart from that it makes a great ride every time :)
I had been on Space Mountain Mission 1 in 1999 and i am afraid to say it was a lot better than now.
The launch was faster and so was the first swoop, and even if the first meters were in the dark than there was a good ambientation and most of all MUSIC!!
Now you can see nothing, can hear nothing and chances you get off there with a bad neck and head ache are great.
I am always worried about restylings and this is an example i am not so wrong. Shame :(
Space Mountain: Mission 2 has got very good theming, great effects and it’s a nice thrilling ride, but for me it’s way too rough. I’ll only ride it 1 or 2 times because of this. It also seems that the onboard sound system is never working, which is a shame because it adds an amazing amount of atmosphere to the ride.
Even though it has got these bad points, it’s always a must do attraction for me every visit.
Although well themed, with some excellent special effects and a thrilling track layout, this ride is just to rough to enjoy nowadays. When I rode it last year it was really rattling around the track, leaving me with painful shoulders and a sore head. It’s a shame as the ride has a lot to recommend – the launch is great and there’s plenty to look at when hurtling round the track.
Mission 2 is the most intense roller coaster in Disneyland Paris, more so than Rock N Roller Coaster. If you can handle a fairly wild ride you should be fine with this. The launch is not as intense as Rock N Roller Coaster.
This is a fast loading ride but it still attracts a line. Trying riding in the morning, or grabbing a FASTPASS.
I think this is a fantastic rollercoaster. If you enter Discoveryland you can’t miss it. The first time I saw it i was shocked because I did’t think that it was so large. The rollercoaster it a bit rough but that doesn’t mather at all for me.
Unfortunatly the music in the trains doens’t work sometimes.
I hope they will fix that in the future…
My score: 9/10
This ride is a great ride for roller coaster lovers but is a bit rough. i would not recommend it if you dont like being shaked around or dont like the dark. All in all its a great ride for roller coaster lovers.
